10 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Clean in the Dishwasher

1. Toys
Tossing toys in your dishwasher is a great idea as it cleans and disinfects them. Toss only metal and plastic toys in, using the cutlery tray or you can place them in a mesh bag. Avoid a real hot drying cycle for plastic toys as it may melt them.

2. Vent Covers
Who wants to take the time to clean vent covers? Instead, just place them in the dishwasher on the racks as you would your plates. They will come clean, even in the narrow grooves.

3. Light Fixtures
Remove the globes from your light fixtures and pop them in the dishwasher. This is a great way to get rid of the dust and grease that tends to build up on them. Remember, it is just the globe or glass shade you should put in.

4. Outlet Covers
From being touched daily, outlet covers tend to get gross. Remove them and run them through the dishwasher for a quick shine.

5. Refrigerator Tray
Spills can make your fridge trays look pretty grimy. Remove these trays and even drawers and run them through a cycle. They will not only look great but smell great too, helping you beat fridge odor.

6. Stove Knobs
Have you ever looked at the grease building up on your stove knobs? Twist them off and run them through the dishwasher. When done, they will look brand new.

7. Shoes
Throw muddy rain boots into the dishwasher as well as gardening shoes or rubber shoes. The dishwasher will power away dirt, mud, and other debris keeping them looking like new.

8. Bathroom accessories
Toss your make up brushes, toothbrush holder, soap holder, and other bathroom accessories that get grimy in for a wash. They will not only be clean but sanitized as well.

9. Gardening Tools
Rinse off the dirt and place tools such as small shovels, spades, and forks into the dishwasher. Cleaning these tools regularly helps you prevent diseases from transferring from plant to plant. It will also keep them looking like new longer.

10. Hair brushes
You can clean your plastic combs and hair brushes on the top rack of your dishwasher. This is a great way to clean and sanitize them, especially if several members of the house use them.

You can also wash sports caps on the top rack. Just place a rubber band around the bill of the cap so that it will hold the curve and wash the hat. I usually try to fill the top rack with the caps.
I remove them before the dry cycle and let them air dry. Remove the rubber band after they have dried.

As a makeup artist, I totally cringed when you said to put your makeup brushes in the dishwasher. Water should never touch the ferrule of your makeup brush and obviously it would in the dishwasher. That, mixed with the heat and steam, will break down the glue in your brush and you’ll begin to lose all your bristles and the wood handle will begin to warp and all sorts of awful things. Great ideas on the others though!
