Six Super Ideas for Birthday Parties

Each year, parents ask the same question: “What can I do for my child’s birthday?” For those who are tired of the same stale parties year after year, here are some creative alternatives:
Mystery party
Elementary- and middle-school children love solving mysteries, as any children’s librarian can attest. Announce at the beginning that certain items necessary for the party are missing. Then give clues as to where the guests can find them.
Polynesian luaus aren’t just for adults. Kids love the theme, too. Set up a blender, and have kids concoct their own smoothies. Cut up hot dogs to look like octopuses by carving one end of each hot dog into eights. For older kids, schedule the party in the evening, adding some tiki torches for ambiance. After it gets dark, tell spooky Polynesian folk stories.
LEGO party
The centerpiece of this party is a cake that resembles a giant LEGO. Start with a large, unfrosted sheet cake and eight unfrosted cupcakes. Remove the paper liners from each cupcake, and place the cupcakes on the sheet cake to resemble a LEGO. Frost the entire creation in a bright color.
For games, time the kids to see who can build the tallest LEGO tower. “Pin the LEGO on the LEGO” is also fun. Remove a key piece from a LEGO creation, and see who can place the piece in the correct spot while blindfolded.
Ice-skating party
Fairy Party
For a little-girls’ party, invite guests to come dressed as fairies. Create a magical table setting with a tulle canopy draped from the ceiling with tacks or tape. For edible party favors, hot-glue flowers to the tops of Pixie Stix. Place the flowers in one big vase as a centerpiece, or place a few at each girl’s place setting.
For fun, have the girls track down “fairy treasures,” shiny beads wrapped in squares of sparkly fabric and cinched with metallic ribbons. Afterwards, the girls can string the beads. Have some extras on hand so each girl has the same number.
Spa Night
Older girls love being pampered with a spa night. Round up a variety of beauty treatments and cosmetics, and let the girls give one another a makeover. Borrow some books from the library that demonstrate makeup application. Wrap up the spa night with a sleepover.
