We love to go hiking with our kids. Here are 10 Things to pack when hiking with kids, we promise you won’t want to forget any of these things!
I participated in Mom Blog Tour Sweets & Snacks Expo (#MomBlogTourFF) on behalf of Wendy’s Bloggers. I received Coleman Steak Snacks to facilitate my post, but my opinion and creative content are my own.
My family loves to go hiking, in fact, we spent a week in the Smoky Mountains hiking every single day. It’s not just beautiful and really good exercise but also a great way to spend time together as a family. We hike and talk for miles and have tons of laughs and good times. These trips are my absolute favorite with my kids.
There are a few things that I think are absolutely necessary to remember to take with you when you head out hiking with kids. I promise you won’t want to forget these because it will just make your life easier.
10 Things to Pack When Hiking with Kids
Snacks – If your kids are anything like mine, they need to eat about every 20 minutes, regardless of where they are or what they’re doing. It is not surprising at all to hear, “I need a snack” before we even reach the trailhead, so we tend to carry quite a few snacks with us.
Our favorite is Coleman Steak Snacks, they’re the perfect hiking snack because they’re full of protein. Instead of empty calories from a candy bar, this snack is going to keep you or your kids going a lot longer.
Backpack – Be sure to grab a good backpack to keep all the things we list in the post together in. It’s so much easier than trying to carry a purse or put items in your pockets!
Water bottle – Why is it that the moment you step outside, everyone is dying of thirst? Trust me, it happens. Make sure that you take plenty of water on your hike, probably a water bottle for each person is the best idea. My kids hate to share their water, so to avoid any fighting it’s best to just plan ahead and give them each their own!
Remember to bring a dish for the dog if you’ll be bringing her along!
First Aid Kit – While I’m incredibly thankful that we haven’t ever had to use our first aid kit, we carry it with us just in case. It’s a basic case that can treat up to four people and contains a variety of bandages, cold pack, and pain relievers. Sometimes I grab antihistamine as well just in case someone gets into poison ivy!
Sunscreen – We go through a lot of this during the summer months! To prevent those nasty sun burns it’s just best to always have sunscreen with you for yourself and the kids.
Sunglasses – Every member of our family has their own pair of sunglasses and we always have them when we’re outdoors. I may end up looking like a raccoon by the end of the year with the white circles around my eyes, but it’s better than squinting at the sun!
Bug Spray – If you’re heading out in the woods hiking, bug spray is something you’ll want to have on hand at all times. We end up with mosquito bites terribly bad if we don’t keep ourselves covered in it. If you don’t like to use a lot of bug spray, make sure to wear jeans and long sleeved shirts to protect you from the bugs and the sun too!
Pocket Knife/Multi-tool – A pocket knife or multi-tool comes in handy when you’re hiking more than you’d ever guess. Even on short hikes with kids and dogs, we use this to clear the trail of thorn bushes, cut briers out of the dog’s fur and a million other things.
Plastic Bags – These are nice to have for any garbage you might have along the way or if someone needs to put a wet shirt, socks, etc in it.
When my boys were younger they would collect rocks and leaves, it was nice to have a plastic bag with us for them to use for their treasures.
Cell Phone – I know this one might sound silly, but we’ve gotten lost hiking in the past and were so glad we had our cell phone’s to check the GPS and get us back on the right trail. I never leave home without mine when we’re headed out into the woods.
