WORST DAYS TO FLY
Christmas and New Years
If you’re looking for a deal when it comes to flights, never and I repeat NEVER try to book a flight on Christmas or New Years. The Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel window is about a 17-day period that overlaps the two holidays. Many people want to travel over convenient long weekends, so the peak days always depend on when the weekends fall in relation to the holidays.
If you MUST book a flight at this time, try to use booking engine that has a flexible date scheduler to find the best time to fly.
Thes busiest and most expensive days to travel around the Thanksgiving Holiday are the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving. If you fly on Thanksgiving Day you will have the cheapest possible fares. Instead of flying home on Sunday when everyone else does, extend your trip a day and save yourself a ton!
Basically, what I’ve found is that any time the kids are out of school is an expensive time to fly! Spring break is one of those super expensive times! Spring break peak travel times can vary from starting as early as late February through Easter. Most of the colleges have spring break in March, but school-aged children like mine typically have them around Easter although it’s common for them to have a March break as well.
We’ve been able to find inexpensive flights to places that aren’t warm or at the beach like the Grand Canyon or Denver, but Florida or the Carribean are very expensive at this time!
It’s typically more expensive to fly during the summer months as well because kids are on break, we like to plan our yearly road trips during the summer and avoid overspending on flights. If you must fly during the summer try to hit the days of the week that are less expensive and busy, you can read about these days below!

Tuesday and Wednesday
It may be difficult to predict the cheapest day of the year to fly, travel experts agree that the cheapest day of the week is typically Tuesday and Wednesday if you want to save money.
Thursdays and Saturdays
After Tuesday and Wednesday, the next cheapest days of the week to fly are Thursday and Saturday. A lot of people think that Saturday will be an expensive time to fly but most travelers prefer to come back from a trip on Sunday. The most popular times for business travelers to fly are Monday and Friday.
Winter and Low Season
Instead of planning a trip during spring break or summer plan a winter trip instead. It may not be practical for all families but if you can have your children miss a couple days of school during the winter months, this can save you a ton of money!
Watch for Deals
There are several different websites that will help you watch for the best deals. I typically use Skyscanner to help me watch for deals, I pick the destination that I’m interested in and I will get an email when the price drops. It works great and helps me to save a ton!
I also like to use TripIt to help me keep my trips organized after I’ve booked them. They have a handy little app that keeps everything together and at my fingertips.
