Best Tip for Getting Rid of Mildew Smell

April 5, 2017   |   10 Comments

How many people love soft towels? I’m a huge fan of my soft towels, but sometimes it’s hard to care for them. I wanted to share some tips for caring for towels. Everyone wants their towels to last longer, so you might as well follow these tips.

Best Tip for Getting Rid of Mildew Smell

Start with a Good Towel

Hotel Collection Premier Bath Towel Collection

Rendered in soft, super-absorbent Annur cotton finished with a clean woven pattern at the hem, the Premier bath towel collection from Hotel Collection provides the ultimate in luxury bathroom appointments.

Available exclusively at Macy’s for $16-$39 per towel. Once you find a good towel, you just stick with it! They’re softer and bigger than a lot of towels that I’ve purchased over the years!

Wash towels before you use them

When you buy new towels, make sure you wash the towels before you use them. Towels have dye on them and it can get everywhere if you’re not careful. By washing and drying the towels before you use them, you are preventing the dye from going everywhere.

Don’t wash towels after one use

The best thing about towels is that you can use them more than once before you wash again. You don’t have to wash those towels every single time you use them. Use them 3-4 times and then wash them.

Wash in like colors together

This is especially true when you first wash towels, you want to wash the like colors together. You want to keep the like colors together, so the dye doesn’t bleed on each other. Once the towels have been washed separately, you can then wash them all at one time. This is better anyways for sanitary purposes. Towels have lots of “you never know what” germs on them.

Shake the towels before putting them in the dryer

Want wrinkle free towels? Make sure you shake the towels before you put them in the dryer. This helps to get rid of the wrinkles and makes your towels dry faster because they aren’t wrapped up in each other.

Use vinegar to get rid of mildew smell in towels

Have you ever had a musty smell in towels, but aren’t sure how to get it out? You can put the vinegar in the fabric softener part of the washer. This will release the vinegar at just the right time and help to get rid of the musty smell. Musty towels are never any fun, so give this tip a try.

Follow these tips and your towels will be soft, clean, and looking awesome for many years to come. Towels can be expensive, so you want to take care of them the best of your ability.

I use fabric softener to keep my towels smelling fresh and feeling soft. I’ve never used vinegar, but I absolutely love the idea! Vinegar is quite the wonder product with a wide variety of helpful uses! Thanks for the great tips!

I use vinegar, like you, and an essential oil blend called purification to get rid of that musty smell. Presoaking in baking soda and hot water can be helpful for smells also. As far as keeping them soft I agree with you, starting with quality towels is key. I also keep good towels separated from rags or cheaper towels (used for the dogs or cleaning) when washing.

I add a couple drops of essential oils to my towels. I can’t use a lot of detergents because of my daughter’s skin… this helps them smell fresh and clean!

I wash my towels in vinegar and then wash again with baking soda. Nice and fluffy, and smell fresh!

Another tip (not washing related…lol) if you have a lot of kid, we have 5, we color code them. Each kid has a color so If i see a red towel thrown on the floor, I know who it belongs to. It has really helped with the amount of towels I wash. They love it. I do it with dishes too ?

I’m a fan of using white vinegar in the wash…plus I’ll add a few drops of tea tree oil. And will dry the towels in the sunshine. In need of new towels…the ones we have are almost 17 years old!

I find my kitchen towels get that odd smell more often than the bath towels. So along with the vinegar rinse, I also hang them out on the line in the summer. The breeze and sun do a wonderful job of making them fresh smelling 🙂

I don’t have a tip, but am definitely trying the vinegar the next time I wash my towels.

    Thanks

I use fabric softener in my rinse cycle to keep my towels soft, though I am considering using vinegar (cheaper and no chemicals!)

If you have a towel or anything with blood on it use peroxide not bleach. It will take out the blood and not tear up your stuff.
