Brilliant Tips for RV Camping with Family
Who’s ready to start traveling and taking vacations this summer? We have some brilliant tips for RV camping with the family that is a MUST read if you’ve ever considered this type of vacation!
Who’s thought about a road trip this summer with their kids? I know that we always plan a destination down south that we have to fly to in the winter months, but during the summer it’s a completely different ball game. We love nothing more than packing up and hitting the road for a relaxing trip where we can stop along the way and see whatever we want.
We’ve taken road trip vacations every summer since my kids were super little but we’ve changed it up a bit over the last three years by using an RV. What I love about this is that we pack ONCE; everything we need is in the RV and goes with us. No moving from hotel to hotel or putting up a tent and then taking it down. We’re packed and on the road taking all the comforts of home with us!
Don’t get me wrong, it is a little work to plan out these trips and make sure you have everything you need or could possibly want in the RV, but it’s so worth it and we’ve narrowed down some brilliant tips for RV camping with kids that will save you time and energy!
Rent an RV/Camper
If you don’t have your own that it is! It’s an experience that everyone MUST have and I’m pretty sure that after you try it, you’ll be hooked like us!
Make sure you pick one that has enough space for the family. You’re not going on this road trip to sit inside the entire time, you’re going to explore! So, it’s nice to have enough space for everyone to sleep comfortably and to be inside if you have a rainy day, but otherwise we are always out around the campfire, hiking and exploring!
Our perfect RV has a master bedroom, bathroom, a pretty normal kitchen (oven, microwave, fridge) and either a bunk area for the kids or a fold out couch for them to sleep. Storage is important too because if you’re like us and head out for a couple weeks, you need supplies!
Bring the Important Stuff From Home
Grab your own bedding. It’s really going to make it feel more like home and you’ll sleep better too. I always grab my kids’ pillows and the blankets they love to have in the camper!
We usually bring a slow cooker for making meals when we’re going to be out hiking all day too, this is a huge time saver for when we get back to camp and are starving and ready to eat!
Bring a coffee pot or a kettle for boiling and making coffee over the fire. I cannot go a day without my hot cup of coffee to get me awake and moving, so having a coffee pot just like at home is worth it to me!Most RV’s have TV’s so we bring movies to watch on rainy days or in the evening when we’re lying in bed relaxing. It makes it feel just like home!
Plan Activities and Adventures
If you’re planning a road trip, you likely have things you want to see and do, right? But, there’s a lot of time spent at the campsite too in the evenings, mornings, etc. Plan some activities for your kids!
My boys like to bring their bikes along with us so they can ride the loops at the campground! A lot of the RV’s have the space to store bikes and toys in them really easily!
Bring outdoor games to play as a family. We love playing Cornhole, it’s always a huge competition with our family so we bring it on every single trip!
Card games are great for those rainy days when you’re stuck inside and need something to do!
Your Pet Can Go Too
One thing we really love about RVing is that we can take Lily (our dog) along with us! Most vacations she has to stay behind, but when we’re road tripping and camping, she gets to go along!
Remember though to take along a leash and follow the rules of the park! Be considerate of NON-pet campers!
Keep small bags with you for cleaning up after they go to the bathroom on walks or around the RV. I like to use any grocery bags that are disposable.
Also, travel with your pets health certificates, rabies shot tag, etc. It’s best to have all of these documents should the need arise.
Remember to bring your pet’s bed or crate to make their stay more like home on the trip too!
Campfire Food is the BEST
This is no joke! Cooking everything over the campfire makes the meal oh so amazing! We make everything from breakfast to dessert, some of our favorites that we made last year are campfire brownies and we had a crawfish boil. That was amazing and we had enough to feed most of the campground! It was delicious!
I usually get my kids involved by asking them what they want for a couple meals when we’re on our trip then I figure out what I need to make them over the fire. It’s never just roasting hot dogs and marshmallows either, it’s things like pizza or tacos! The stuff we have at home that they love!
Remember that dessert is one of the best things to make over a campfire! We don’t always have dessert at home after a meal but for some reason, we always do on our camping trips and it’s something we’ve really learned to love and look forward to!
