Champions For Kids Big Book Drive Donation #NickCFK

September 14, 2012   |   23 Comments

Nickelodeon, Walmart, Champions For Kids, Simple Service Project, Big Help Book Drive

The September Champions for Kids Simple Service project is centered around kids and reading, it is called Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive.    When I started this project last week, there was so much that I learned and really thought about.

This alarming fact has stuck with me and really pushed me to work hard at my book drive.
61% of low-income families have no books for children in their homes, and more than 80% of the preschool and after-school programs serving at-risk children have no books at all.

I think this is terribly sad!  There are kids who don’t have the privilege of reading or be read to because they don’t have access to books!  Now, I am aware that there are other ways to acquire books to read in your home.  But, as a parent, how would I feel if I could not provide books for my boys?  Not only are books and reading at home an excellent way to increase your academic skills, but it is also an important bonding time with your kids.

How can I help?

My boys and I put together a little book drive in our neighborhood.  We decided to put the call to action out with our friends and neighbors and so many of them stepped up to the plate to help!

Here is the contribution from just one family on our street!  This was well over 50 books!

I put together a little thank you and gave out to everyone who helped us raise books to donate.

What better than cookies to thank a person for being a sweetie and donating to kids in need!?

We were originally going to donate to my boys elementary, but after looking around town and thinking about things.  We decided to donate to the Preschool/Daycare in our Community Center. They have a lot of kids and I can imagine that they need books.

My little guy is such a great helper!  He hauled in a big heavy bag of books!

In the end we donated 120 books including the new Nickelodeon Books that we picked up at Walmart that started this project off!

I would like to encourage all of my readers to seriously consider participating in this simple service project.  Not only will you be helping kids in your community, I cannot tell you the feeling of pride you have when your kids get on board and help others.

Teaching your kids about giving and sharing blessings with others is one of the best lessons you can give to your children.

This is fantastic! What a great collection. My MOPS group is currently doing something similar to this, and I hope we can do this well.

What a fabulous cause! We always give a donation to First Books instead of a Christmas gift for our parents…they're all former educators and appreciate that much more than more stuff.

We will be moving soon. I think this would be a great idea to start in a new neighborhood! And it would give us an opportunity to meet our new neighbor's too! Jennifer R.

This is an amazing idea! I just might have to get my kids involved in a project like this once we're settled into the new school year. We have a public library that could always use new books as well as a Catholic school that struggles to stay open each year, let alone buy books for the classroom. Thanks for the information!
