Champions for Kids Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive #NickCFK

Is reading to your children a part of your daily life?
Do you take the time to read with your kids on a daily basis?
Do you think kids who are read to when they are young develop a love for reading?
Do those kids, who love to read, end up doing better in school because they enjoy and spend more time reading?
A bunch of questions!  But, if you really think about it, it all makes sense!  Start the love of reading young, by reading with your kids, and you are setting them up to succeed!  Have you ever heard a parent say, “If only I hadn’t read to my son so much”.  Probably not!

Here is a number that may surprise you!

  • 61% of low-income families have no books for children in their homes, and more than 80% of the preschool and after-school programs serving at-risk children have no books at all.

How sad is it to think that these kids may not be reading at there full potential because they do not have books?!  This was upsetting to think about.  How much I take advantage of a simple pleasure like reading to my children!

What can I do to help?
I have worked with Champions For Kids on a couple projects this summer and now they have a Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive.

To get started with this book drive, the first thing I did was get my boys on board to help.
Who better than kids to help other kids!
We headed out to Walmart and purchased some books to get us going with the book drive {check out my shop HERE}
My boys LOVE books, so they were in heaven!
My little guy found a book and a spot to sit and read while he was waiting for me.

The older guy found a new book to take on the bus tomorrow, he was pretty pumped.

Next, I let my neighbors and friends know about our new project and put the call to action out.  We are looking for new and gently used books to donate to our local school.  They would love donations for the media center, class rooms or to give out to children in need.

Here is the pile of books that we have to start us off!

We have a pretty good start to our box of books.  The Nickelodeon books that we purchased at Walmart as well as my boys going through their books and donating a bunch.
Here is a conversation that I had with my son
while he was picking books:

Son: If I give some of my books to kids who don’t have any can I have a cookie?
Me: Yes, sure.
Son: Well, I would have gave them the books anyway.  But, I really want a cookie.

This got me thinking!
Anyone who contributes to my book drive will be getting a dozen homemade cookies as a “thank you”.  The more books you bring me, the more cookies I give you!  Sweet deal?  If you ask my son, it’s not, because it cuts into his cookie stash. 🙂

I look forward to sharing my results with you next week!

This is adorable! I hope you give your son lots of cookies for having such a giving heart. 🙂

“If only I hadn't read to my son so much” – that's something I hope to never hear anyone say!
