Christmas Tree Decorating Tips

December 8, 2017   |   Leave a Comment

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a beautifully decorated tree! It has taken me quite a few years to master the art of tree decorating; with two kids, we have had our fair share of adorable kid decorated trees! I am sure you know what I mean. The hodgepodge of ornaments and bare spots that tug at your heartstrings.

Christmas Tree Decorating Tips

I have partnered with Tree Classics to bring you this tutorial.

While there is something sweet about a tree the kids decorated, we are entering the phase of the boys getting older; they are busier this year and their excitement for trimming the tree has waned. This year I found myself handling most of the decorating. I experimented and tested, tried and rearranged until I mastered the art of decorating a tree. I am going to share my tips and tricks with you so that this year you can have a tree that is trimmed so beautifully it is magazine worthy!

Pick the right tree
This year, slim is in! A tall, slim tree offers visual appeal and saves space. I am sure that at some point, you have had a big bushy tree and have had the misfortune of bumping into it a few times to send ornaments flying and needles falling to the ground.
A slim tree minimizes the space needed and makes a uniform appearance easier than ever to achieve. My favorite option this year was an Oregonian Slim Christmas Tree. These are available in both 7 and 9-foot options from Tree Classics.  The body of this tree puts you in the mind of a holiday spent at a winter lodge. Made to fit into a smaller space, this is the perfect tree for families.
Christmas Tree Decorating Tips
Start with your lights
The first step to trimming the perfect tree begins with lights. I loved that my Oregonian Slim Tree came pre-lit and has a 2-year warranty on the lights.  If you are not using a pre-lit tree, I recommend using 100 lights per foot of the tree for a warmly lit appearance.
Add garland
After adding plenty of lights, make sure to add garland next. Start at the top of the tree. As you work your way down the tree, add more garland between waves. It is okay to add a little extra space between waves of garland at the top, but towards the bottom being generous with the garland will eliminate some of the bare spaces and bulging that can occur.
Christmas Tree Decorating Tips
Add Ornaments
Begin with your favorite ornaments. There are always a few that hold special meaning and to ensure they get to be the star of the show, offer them the prime real estate of the tree! After your cherished ornaments have been hung, begin with the largest ornaments. Pay special attention to the trunk of the tree, adding ornaments around it creates depth. Then you can begin filling in with your smaller ornaments.
Finishing Touching
Now is the time to add bows, icicles, and clip-on ornaments.  A few handmade bows or accent items can complete the look, but be careful not to overdo it! Finally, you will add your tree skirt to the bottom and a few gifts underneath of a tree that is gorgeous enough to grace the pages of a magazine.
If you are looking for the perfect tree, I would recommend shopping at Tree Classics. You can find the Oregonian Slim Tree in 2 sizes as well as so many other gorgeous options.
