Couples Getaway: Aspen, Colorado

March 15, 2016   |   1 Comment

Last weekend, my hubby and I took four days for for us and got away for a couples getaway with some relaxation and fun.  I know this is probably shocking to many people because we’re right in the middle of building a new house and by building a new house I mean my hubby is doing 90% of the work himself.  We’re a short two weeks away from moving and this probably wasn’t the best time for a trip OR maybe it was.  We really really needed a break.  Between working full time and then working on the house every night and weekend, we’re shot.

We decided to head out to Aspen, Colorado for four days and enjoy the mountains.  We thought about flying but in the end decided to road trip so that we had more time in the car to chat about – well everything.  It’s a long drive from Iowa, but it was really peaceful and relaxing just the two of us.

To be completely honest, I’m not a skier but I love the mountains and snow so I really wanted to check out Aspen and see what it was like.  I have some of my favorite parts of the trip to share with you.  Where we stayed, where we ate and what we did for fun!

The Perfect Couples Getaway weekend: Aspen, Colorado!

Where We Stayed In Aspen

Inn at Aspen (Wyndham Vacation Rental)

The Inn at Aspen is a conveniently located ski-in/ski-out resort that’s located at the base of Buttermilk Mountain and is the ideal resort for families, couples or individuals! It’s fabulous because there is a ski school, ski rentals and the ticket office all in one location.  Not to mention that it’s only a couple minutes from downtown Aspen and Snowmass.

If you’re not skiers this resort is still a great vacation destination.  The rooms are spacious with amazingly comfortable beds.  The Inn at Aspen Hotel provides family-friendly amenities and services including free wireless internet access and an onsite restaurant, McKenney’s at The Inn. Other on-site amenities include a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, steam room, health club, and courtesy airport shuttle.

The weather was gorgeous while we were in Aspen and it was perfect for sitting outside next to the fire while we watched everyone ski.  I could do this for hours!

Aspen Colorado

We decided to stay at a Wyndham resort because I knew I’d be taken care of before, during and after the trip by their professionals.  They’re a brand that we know and trust so when I found a location in Aspen, I was sold! With Wyndham Vacation Rentals, you can book knowing your vacation is backed by the Vacation Rental Bill of Rights, which means I didn’t have to worry.  I booked the hotel site unseen and knew that it would be a great place to stay!

Where We Ate in Aspen

McKenny’s at the Inn

We had breakfast every morning at McKenny’s, which was an awesome buffet of eggs, bacon, potatoes,  muffins, and much more. We ended up being so full after breakfast we never needed to stop for lunch during the day.

We also had dinner at McKenny’s the first night and had some delicious meals.  My hubby had a Kalua Pulled Pork sandwich that was amazing.  I need to try to make a version of this at home for my family!

Hickory House Ribs

This is an absolutely MUST try when you’re in Aspen.  The food is amazing and the portions are HUGE!  They opened at 5pm for dinner and we were there right at 5.  By 15 after they were so busy and full!  It’s obviously a place where everyone goes!

What To Do in Aspen

Ski Resorts and Winter Fun – Of course Aspen is known for a skiing destination.  Aspen ski resorts & Snowmass ski resorts open the door to some of the best ski terrain—in the country. A legendary winter playground.

Shopping – We spent a day just shopping in downtown.  There are so many shops with everything from souvenirs to designer bags. Plus, there are so many places to eat while you’re downtown.

Hiking and Enjoying the Mountains – We really like to just get out and walk.  We ended up finding some really beautiful parks and creeks right next to downtown.  Plus, you can’t forget all the mountain views.  Maroon Bells is one of the most photographed areas in Colorado and it’s within minutes of Aspen!

Après Ski Cocktail Classic – A slope-side celebration of the Après Ski Cocktail Experience in Aspen.  Just one of the events that Aspen holds throughout the year.  Be sure to stop over and check the event calendar to see what’s going on when you plan to visit!  Or plan your trip about this awesome event!

Aspen has so much to offer! Obviously, we were there during the winter months but there are tons of things to do and see in the summer as well. There was so much more that we could have done but we were really enjoying our relaxing time of sitting in the lodge and watching all the activity while we had some delicious food and drinks.  That is MY kind of a trip!

If you’re looking for other Ski Destinations by  Wyndham Vacation Resorts here is a list of all of them!
