Fun Fall Fixings: 5 Ways to Cook with Apples

August 16, 2013   |   Leave a Comment

Apples are in abundance during the fall months, and as a result you can usual score a bushel or two fairly inexpensively. Apples of course are crisp, sweet, juicy, and naturally quite tasty and healthy. Because of this they can make a wonderful addition to many of your everyday recipes and dishes! Not sure where to get started? Take a look below at 5 ways to cook with apples in your own kitchen. Just a few slices of apples can really change up a dish, so take a peek below at how to get cooking with apples today!

5 Ways to Cook with Apples:

1. Spice up cider.

Pour a gallon jug of basic apple cider into a crock pot or soup pot. Add some sliced oranges, a few pinches of cinnamon and nutmeg, and of course, a few sliced apples. Red, green, or yellow varieties will work just fine. Slice a few up and toss them in the warmed cider, and before you know it your store bought cider will taste like fresh, homemade brew!

2. Give ribs a boost.

The next time you bake ribs or cook them in your crock pot, add a few slices of fresh bacon and some thick apple slices to the mix. Just like ribs are often smoked with applewood, apples give meat a wonderful, hearty yet sweet flavor. Red varieties work best for this tip, so cut them thick and toss them in before cooking.

3. Sweeten up a shake.

If you are in the mood for a fall themed shake, just toss a few chunks of apple in with vanilla ice cream in your blender. You can add a touch of cinnamon if you wish and some caramel chunks for a real treat you won’t be able to pass up!

4. Frugal fruit snacks.

Slice some apples thin and layer them on trays in your food dehydrator. You can sprinkle with seasonings if you wish, and in no time you will have crisp apple fruit snacks at half the cost of store bought and made without all of the sugar and preservatives.

5. Tasty turkey.

Next time you whip up a turkey sandwich, add a few thin slices of red apple and swiss. It will give your sandwich a sweet and savory flavor plus add a little extra crunch.
See how easy it is to use apples in your everyday recipes? Slice some up and give them a try, they have a taste that you just can’t beat.
