Guest post from applestone drive!

I am excited today to have another guest post!  Sara from applestone drive is sharing with us!

Also, if you haven’t signed up for my $25 Target Giftcard Giveaway please head over HERE and be sure to check out the details on an upcoming Pinterest contest that I am co-hosting!

Hi, I’m Sara from applestone drive! I’m a newbie blogger showcasing simple DIY projects, sharing stories of family, faith and adoption and trying to figure out computer jargon, photography and linky parties along the way! You can also check me out on Pinterest or Facebook! I’m so thrilled to be guest posting here at The Taylor House. Such an honor!

Recently, I begged asked my readers for help in beautifying my lamp shades in my master bedroom. I have seen so many creative and gorgeous ideas for making shades not so plain and I just couldn’t decide what mine needed. You can click on over to see some ideas I pinned and read more about what I was working with but here is the bottom line:

I love, love, love my lamps. They were a Craigslist find years ago – $5 each!   I also love my nightstands (from a flea market) but I felt like there was something missing: color!

First, I decided to do a trim around the edge and hot glued some jute rope. Total Fail!! I couldn’t even bring myself to take a picture of it. It. was. that. bad.
It totally distracted from the simplicity and elegance of the glass lamps. I tried to rip it off as best I could but it was obvious I would have to use something to cover up my error.
I also thought they still looked too plain with just a trim and started thinking about adding just a small decal or stencil using fabric.
And then, while searching through my fabric stash, I came across the remant of my shower curtain. Perfection!
(Click {here} and {here} to see where else I have used this curtain.) I cut out two of the birds and used spray adhesive to stick them onto the shades.

Then I found a trim in a coordinating color at JoAnn’s. I was going to use grosgrain ribbon but they didn’t have the width I wanted. Thankfully, I found hem tape in the same shade for a cheaper price than the ribbon.

Unfortunately, my jute rope disaster keeps these from looking as crisp and pristine as I had hoped. But from a distance, they look fine to me. And because it was such a cheap re-do, I won’t mind starting over in the future if needed.

I’m also glad it seems suitable for a master bedroom. It couldn’t be too girly or frilly since I do share the space with a boy. 🙂 And, a final look with the before and after:

Thanks again, Chrissy, for being such a gracious host and allowing me to share a project with your readers!

Thanks, Sara!

The birds are a wonderful idea! Those, along with the trim, make this truly custom and I don't notice anything from the first disaster. ~ Maureen
