Home Lighting Makeover #GELighting

June 1, 2012   |   9 Comments

I recently decided to work on a lighting makeover in my home.  I didn’t exactly change all of the fixtures but instead the bulbs.  I realized that I keep a lot of lights on to make my home look nice and feel cozy.  This isn’t very energy efficient and it ends up costing us quite a bit.

I did some research on the GE Smart Energy bulbs and decided to head out to Sam’s Club to purchase these. You can see how my shopping trip went over Here.

The reason I decided to purchase these bulbs even though they are more expensive up front is very simple,

They last longer and are more efficient.
energy efficient lights

First, I started int the guest room, I want my guests to be comfortable when they stay with us. I do not want people to feel that they are in the way or uncomfortable at all. When I know that I am expecting guests, I turn on ALL of the lamps in the room as well as the bathroom. I think it really makes the room feel welcoming. The bad part about that, is that some times, I’m not completely sure when our company is going to arrive. There are days when the lamps are left on for several hours, which isn’t really efficient.
Here is the night stand with the lamp.  The new GE Energy Smart bulbs have such a nice soft glow.  It feels very welcoming, but yet it is more efficient to run the lamp for a longer period with these new bulbs.

Here is another one of the lamps on the desk,
I love the way it looks!

Here is a sneak peek of the bedroom, I hope to have it finished soon to share with you!

Next, I moved to the kitchen to change some bulbs.
This is an area in the kitchen that I have a small lamp, and again, I like to have it on a lot.

Another reason that I love these bulbs!
My master bedroom has a light that is really high in a vaulted ceiling.  I love that I changed the bulbs and now I won’t have to worry about changing them again for YEARS!
My boys both have lamps on their night stands and they are always leaving them on.  I have gotten up several times in the night to find a lamp was left on when someone fell asleep.  I feel a little bit better about that now that we have these amazing new energy efficient GE light bulbs!

Finally, here is a lamp in my living room that I changed the
bulb in as well.
These are just a few examples of the lighting we changed with our new GE bulbs. We have lots of ceiling fan lights, bathroom lights, and recessed lighting that we have and are continuing to change so that we can make our home more energy efficient and save some money down the road!
GE has this awesome CFL Savings Calculator to estimate your savings with their Energy Smart CFL bulbs, you can calculate your own savings by going to their link HERE.
This is how my saving came out, $156.80 for a year!  I spent right around $25, so this was completely worth that investment!

Some other ideas that we use to help save money on energy:

We use ceiling fans to help cool us down.
Shut blinds and curtains when it is hot out to keep the sun out.
Turn lights off when you leave a room.
Unplug appliances that are not in use.
Air dry dishes, instead of using dishwasher.
Install a programmable thermostat.

You can find GE on Facebook and Twitter and be sure to print out the coupon that is available on my side bar.

Wow, good job! Yes, these energy-saving bulbs might be more expensive.. but if you’re going to think about it, these energy-saving bulbs can save a lot from your electricity bills. And the best thing about them? They have longer life span than regular bulbs. As an electrician here in Springfield MO, I usually convince customers who are using regular bulbs to change them to energy-saving ones. 🙂

We have not had much luck with the CFL's as they last only as long as the regular bulbs. Not to mention please be careful we had a mishap where one bulb got dropped and exploded. Leaving my whole family very woozy and sick from the fumes. To me they are not worth the risk. I have since gotten rid of all my CFL's they are not worth the health risk to my family!
