Let me start out by saying that I am not a big gadget person, I typically don’t have to have the newest and best electronic that comes on the market. I’m pretty happy with the computer I have, it does what I need it to do.
Then I was invited to the Microsoft event a couple weeks ago at the Mall of America and my mind was blown. I had the chance to learn about and play with some awesome products which left me amazed and ready to buy some new gadgets.
I’m sure you have all heard about the Surface, it’s that amazing little tablet that does backflips on the commercials. The Surface has a keyboard that you can snap off and use as a tablet or use it with the keyboard and it resembles a small laptop.
I have to tell you that my favorite part was using the app Fresh Paint on the Surface, I actually used a paint brush to create art work on the tablet. I can see this entertaining my kids for hours!
We also made some Christmas Cards using a family photo and Power Point, I had no idea that there were so many cool ways to create things with that program. We were in Windows 8 so I was able to get a little bit more familiar with it, it’s awesome!
The Surface is incredibly light weight too, it would be fabulous for taking on the go or traveling. Right now I haul my heavy laptop with me everywhere, and the last time we traveled it was terrible. My shoulder actually ended up swollen and sore from my how heavy my bag with my laptop was.
Ok, are you ready to be blown away now? Seriously, this is some AMAZING stuff that Microsoft showed us. Have you heard about these 3D printers? When I say 3D, I mean you can actually print out “stuff”, we’re not talking paper snowflake ornaments or anything like that.
We’re talking actual things like this chain link, the 3D printer actually printed it out like this. In links! The printer prints in layers, so it was able to print the chain links actually linked together.
How about this little Skype rocket? The 3D printer made it. Pretty cool, right?! It is like magic, seriously.
Here is the machine in action, you can see in the image above, there was nothing on this white platform to start with and now it’s printing out an object. It took a few minutes to get the machine heated up and ready to go, but considering what it’s doing, it was amazingly fast. The actual printing out does take some time, I think they said it would take an hour to print this out so I didn’t get to see the finished product but just seeing how it works was great!
There have been so many different ways that this has been used, they told us that people have made splints for broken fingers, missing pieces to games or toys and so many other ways. I think being able to print out a missing Lego piece that my boys need would be fabulous!
I had so much fun at the Microsoft event, my good friend Ashley was there too so I had to snap a photo of us together. Ashley is a Microsoft expert, I’m so glad I sat beside her so I could ask questions.
Fingers crossed I get that new Surface 2 for Christmas this year, it’s amazing!
