I never thought I would be a dog person! Ever. Period.
Then my boys started to ask for a puppy and I started thinking about the idea of a dog. I wasn’t sure, there were so many risks with getting a dog.
What if you couldn’t potty train it?
What if it hates kids?
What if my house stunk like dog all the time?
What if my family was allergic?
But, the kids kept asking and to be honest, my house was so quiet during the day while they were all gone to school and work. I decided maybe I’d just start looking at breeds and doing a little research and after a few months we ended up with Lily.
She was so adorable and little, less than 2 pounds when we brought her home. We loved her and the first day was amazing. Then reality hit and to be honest the second day I was sure I made a terrible mistake. I had no idea how to train a dog, my husbands eye was itchy and swollen and I was pretty sure my house smelled like a wet dog all the time. Ahhhh!
After calling my Mom and freaking out. I got to business on researching how to train a dog and created some Pet Chores for kids so that they could help with all this extra work like potting the dog, feeding the dog , etc. Things work out so much better when you have a plan!
I thought I’d share some of my kids Pet Chores with you, if you’re planning to get a puppy or have a dog – these are great jobs that the kids can help with!
Pet Chores for Kids
Potty the Dog – This is probably the most involved job because it happens the most often during the day. We use the bell method where Lily rings a bell that’s hanging from the door knob when she needs to go outside. After she comes in, she gets a treat like the CocoChia Bakes. She knows that she always gets a treat after going potty, so having one that’s good for her is important!
Feeding the Dog – We feed Lily twice a day, first thing when she gets up and then around our supper time, the boys take turns feeding her each day. She recently switched from a puppy food to Wellness TruFood and is loving it. We seriously have to hide the bag of food because she can’t get enough of this food.
Walking the Dog – This is something we do together, the boys like to have me with them when they walk her. I think they get nervous when there are other dogs that come up to her. We like to walk Lily every evening if weather permits and the boys go along. It’s great exercise for everyone and a chance to talk!
Cleaning the Yard – Yep, dogs poop a lot. Seriously. The boys take turns on poop patrol and cleaning up the yard. It’s a must before we mow so nobody ends up with icky shoes!
