Photography Course Week 5 plating with Sear’s Grilling

August 6, 2012   |   7 Comments

Sear's Grilling, Photography, SoFabU

This is week five of  my photography course with Sear’s Grilling.  You can see my post about my first intro week HERE, the second week of shopping at Sear’s for a grill HERE, the third week of purchasing my grill HERE and the fourth week of using my grill HERE!!  I think this was my favorite week but the absolute hardest week!  We learned alot about lighting and plating food.  This is the area that I have been waiting for in the course and my new grill has really been put to the test with all the foods I have been grilling.  It has performed wonderfully, and we couldn’t be happier with it!
I am always taking photographs of food and I really wanted to be one of those bloggers with awesome photos.  That being said, there is nothing harder than timing your meal on the grill right with outdoor lighting, kids and life in general.  I hope that I get better with practice!

I really feel that plating food is a bit like staging a house.  You want it to be clean looking, the colors to work together and not have a lot of clutter in the way.  I may love that pink and purple stripped wall but it will distract from the room, just like a flowery plate would distract from the food.  You want the food to be the center of attention not the props, plate etc.

The first meal that I made was grilled chicken and rice.  It was an easy meal and I was able to focus on taking photographs.

I used a white washed wood looking photography background under my white plate for most of my shots.  It was neutral but not too plain.  Using a piece of scrap book paper for your shots either under the plate or in the back ground is another trick.

I also used simple props like forks, a glass, napkin, or place mat.

The second meal that I made was simple hamburgers with grilled green beans and chips.  It was at about this point that I realized, I don’t like taking photos of meat.  LOL.  But, the seeds on the bun, ADORABLE!  Here are a few of my photos.

My final meal was a grilled shrimp salad, this was really a spur of the moment meal where I used lots of produce that I had on hand with the shrimp.  I love all the colors in the salad!

Another tip that I learned this week is to be sure that you check your food.  Are there wilted pieces of lettuce?  Or does the tomato look less than ripe?  Make sure you only use the best looking product in your photos!

Even though this week was extremely tough, I think it was so much fun!  I am alot more comfortable with plating food and photographing it!  I can’t wait to use the skills that I have learned in future posts!

Thanks again to Sear’s Grilling and SoFabU for making this course possible for me!

I think your photos look great, Chrissy!! I LOVE the one of the closeup of the hamburger bun taken from overhead…and the first one too, that's one of my favorites. And you are so right about food photography being like staging a house!
