Spring Cleaning: Whitening Laundry Solution

April 11, 2013   |   1 Comment

Hey there! It’s Jessica from Prairie Girl to Southern Belle.  Spring is here!  Well, it’s here where I live anyway.  I had seen a recipe for washing your yellowed pillows over at One Good Thing and decided to give it a try. Not only did it work great on our pillows, but all the white curtains in the house are gleaming as well! Let me show you…

These sheer curtains weren’t white anymore. How did I not notice this?!  They looked like they were shaded with pencil…you know that color?  Gross.

Whitening Laundry Detergent

Here they are. Gleaming in the window, blowing in the spring breeze. Probably catching a lot of pollen. Pollen is SO bad here in the spring but I couldn’t resist airing the house out for the day. Pretty soon it will be too hot.

Whitening Laundry Detergent

Here is a picture of the kitchen curtains (aka king sized sheet). I love natural day light but also want a bit of privacy. White window treatments does the trick!

Whitening Laundry Detergent
Whitening Laundry Solution
slightly adapted from this recipe

Hot Water
1/2-1 cup laundry detergent
1 dishwasher detergent tab (I use Finish) (if you have powdered, use 1/2 to 1 cup)
1 cup bleach
1/2 cup borax

Set washer to hot and turn on the extra rinse. Turn the washer on to ‘soak’ and let it fill with hot water with nothing in it, adding the ingredients at the same time. If you have a full washer, use the one cup measurements. If you have a small load you’ll be fine with half the detergent. I even added a big pot of boiling water. Add your items. If you are washing pillows, make sure to wash 2 at a time to help balance the spin cycle.
**drying your pillows may take a few cycles
**be sure to look at the tag on the pillow to see if washing is recommended

How is your spring cleaning going? Any tips?

The thought of making laundry detergent has always been daunting to me. How do you like the smell?
