Hi Everyone! Thank you to Chrissy and all The Taylor House readers for letting me drop in today. I am excited to share my easy to make camp granola recipe with you! My name is Kelly and I run a super fun camping site called Beyond The Tent.
My husband and I share our adventures of camping with our five children. It can get a little crazy sometimes, but it’s a ton of fun! We also cover camping reviews and how to articles that are related to camping on the site.
Honey Granola Is Healthy And Good
As a Mom, I try my best to make camping a very memorable and enjoyable time for my family. Which means the more things I can have ready before arriving to the campground the more time I can have playing with the kids. Meal planning and preparing is done in advance to help free up my daily chore of making breakfast, lunch and dinners. Including the normal meals, I also try to have a handful of healthy snacks pre-made for the long car rides and the family vacation. A long time favorite and one of the easiest treats in my recipe box is homemade camp granola. It doesn’t take too much time to put together, but it also doesn’t make a huge mess which is great when my younger girls want to give me an extra hand in the kitchen!
First, you will want to have a very large bowl and fill it with 5 cups of old fashion oats. Next, you will want to crush 2 cups of plain Special K Cereal and add it to the large mixing bowl of oats. After that you will want to add in 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon, 1 Tablespoon of Flaxseed and 2 Tablespoons of Wheat Germ. Mix it all together.
Now that the first steps are complete, set aside your large mixing bowl. The next step is to heat ½ cup oil (I use Olive or Sunflower oil) and a ½ cup of honey on the stove. I would suggest using a high graded honey to give your camp granola the best flavor. In this recipe I used an organic honey from Trader Joe’s.
You will want to let the honey and oil come to a warm temperature. Take it off the heat once you see it starting to bubble.
Slowly, pour the honey sauce into the large bowl of oats. Mix well, then spread the granola onto a flat cookie sheet.
Bake in the oven at 300* for 40-50 minutes, making sure to stir every 10 minutes.
Add Dried Apples To Your Granola
You can add in any type of dried fruit once the granola has cooled (I like to add mini chocolate chips too!). Camp Granola is easy to store and keeps well in zip lock baggies. Another idea is to add it to a container of yogurt and freeze it overnight. It would be a great breakfast to wake up to while camping with a special side of campfire doughnuts!
It is so easy to make camp granola that I don’t mind preparing it for our trips. The kids all love it plus, it’s good for them to eat. It’s a win-win! The best part is having the kids involved with cooking healthy meal and snacks. There are so many things we can discuss during the process, like why do we add honey and not sugar or what is flaxseed and wheat germ.
I hope you get outdoors this summer, just so you can have a chance to enjoy your camp granola! Of course, you don’t have to go camping to appreciate homemade granola, it goes well with hotel stays, too.
Happy Camping – Kelly
