Freezer Cooking Tips

Get a Freeze – This is a no-brainer but you have to have a good sized freezer in order to make freezer meals. The one that’s about your refrigerator is ok, but it won’t hold a months worth of meals! We have a nice sized chest freezer that was about $200 and has saved us much more money than that!

More Freezer Meal Ideas – Of course, this post is a great place to find recipes that have already been tried and work well as freezer meals but if you’re looking for more ideas make sure you hit the freezer section at the grocery store. Typically any meal that you find can be made cheaper and with fewer preservatives if you make them yourself!

Plan Ahead – Typically I plan a day of grocery shopping and then a day of prep. Don’t try to do it all at once because you will end up hating the entire process! I think it’s fun to make them with a friend too, each of you brings ingredients for a double batch of 15 meals then swap with each other! You’ll end up with 15 new simple family meals that freeze well that you probably haven’t made before! Remember to provide instructions on how to bake!

How to Store Freezer Meals – I like to make sure that everything I make as a freezer meal can go in a freezer bag, this way I’m not using all my Tupperware. My only tip is to make sure you cool the food before placing it in the bag.  Then, when you want to heat up the food, just cut off the resealable bag and add it to a glass bowl.

In regards to brands of resealable freezer bags, I’ve used all kinds of brands, including Great Value or the Boulder brand from Aldi.

Marinade Your Meat – Logic would tell you that if you wait to marinade your meat after you pull it out of the freezer, you’re going to have to wait a day to let it thaw out and then a second day to marinade. Right? Instead of that, add your meat and marinade in a freezer bag before you freeze it. Then when you’re ready to make that meal, pull it out of the freezer and let it thaw and marinade during the day before you cook it that night. GENIUS!

Freeze Meals Flat – This helps so you can fit more freezer meals in your space.

Stuff You Need For Freezer Cooking

Hands free Ziplock Bag Holder

Jokari Baggy Holder

This little baggy holder makes prepping meals SO EASY. The arms are extendable and you can use it on smaller quart bags for things like freezer chicken marinades (no more raw chicken touching the outside of the bag!), and when they are extended, they hold a gallon-sized freezer bag perfect for freezer slow cooker meals.

Quart Ziploc Bags for Chicken Marinade

Gallon Freezer Bags

These are great for freezing your meals flat, place everything in the Freezer Bag and then lay it on a cookie sheet. They’re great for Chicken Marinade too, you can shake it up and get the flavor to all the chicken.

Erasable Food Labels

The most important rule of Freezer Meal Making is to label your food! Don’t end up with meals that you have no idea if they’re good or bad because you can’t remember when you froze them!

What are some of your favorite simple family meals that freeze well? I’d love to hear some more delicious ideas!

Because my husband always says I’ll eat it and then doesn’t want it. This looks like a can divide down to 2 portions or just take out what is needed. So a month could be 2-3 months because I share with elderly neighbors and friends who need a meal that they don’t have to cook.
