What is in Classic Egg Salad Sandwich
Are you wondering what you put in egg salad besides eggs? You don't need a bunch of different ingredients, but there are a few essential ones. I promise you that this is the best egg salad recipe in the world, it's that delicious!
-
- Large eggs - I have found that large eggs are truly the best recipe for making egg salad. Six is the perfect amount for making this batch of egg salad too.
- Mayo - Yes, you need mayo for this recipe. You can use whatever kind of mayo you have on hand. Again, you don't need a special kind of mayo, just use what is in your pantry.
- Kosher salt - My favorite ingredient in this entire recipe is kosher salt. It helps bring out the flavor in the egg salad.
- Worcestershire sauce - If you love the way Worcestershire sauce tastes, then you know what an asset it is to this recipe.
- Yellow mustard - This recipe uses the classic mustard and yes it brings flavor and goodness to this egg salad recipe.
As you can see, the number of ingredients is minimal and it's so easy to make. I will show you how to make this recipe and you are going to enjoy making it for your family.
WHAT DO YOU PUT IN YOUR EGG SALAD?
I keep my egg salad pretty simple, a little mayonnaise, red onion, salt, pepper, paprika and some chives, for garnish. This is the way I like to make my egg salad but you can totally make this your own! Here's some suggestions:
- Add pickle juice, diced pickles or pickle relish
- Include some veggies like chopped celery or carrots for texture
- Add some Dijon mustard
- Add some protein such as diced cooked shrimp or crab meat
- Swap the chives for fresh dill
- Try adding a few capers
- Tomatoes on top of the Egg Salad
- Cheese
How Long Can Egg Mayo Sandwich Last
Once made, if you keep it in a covered pot in the fridge it'll last 4-5 days. I have built up a good collection of small and large click n lock containers over the years, but there are plenty of others on the market - or cover any pot with cling film or foil.
How Much Egg Salad Should You Make Per Person
If you're serving this to guests for lunch, I like to make at least ½ cup of egg salad (or about 2 eggs) per person - this should make about two sandwiches per person. If you're serving this on egg salad sandwiches, I'd also put out a plate with extra tomato slices and lettuce. Make sure you toast the bread and assemble the sandwiches just before serving, so the bread doesn't get soggy.
Making egg salad ahead of time
Egg salad is great for making ahead of time; in fact, I think it tastes so much better after it's had at least an hour or so in the refrigerator for the flavors to really mingle.
All the flavors really come together well, and it tastes great chilled.
How to serve egg salad
There are plenty of ways to serve egg salad, but I'll share a few of my favorite ideas:
- Plain - just on a bed of lettuce and eat with a fork.
- Bagel - toast a sesame, onion, or everything bagel and top it with plenty of egg salad.
- Croissant - pick up some croissants from the bakery and pile the egg salad up high.
- Sandwich - any bread will do, I like to toast it, so it doesn't make a soggy sandwich.
- Lettuce cups - using any type of lettuce you like.

Classic Egg Salad is something you can make for lunch or dinner. You can use it as a side of the main dish. The bottom line is that you cannot go wrong with this recipe! The flavor is so delicious that my family asks for it at least once a week!

How To Thicken Egg Salad
If your egg salad turns out a little too runny, you can add more chopped hard boiled eggs to the mix. You can also put the egg salad back into the refrigerator as the cold can help firm up the mayonnaise and stir before serving.
Another tip to help prevent runny egg salad, wait to add the celery or tomato until just before serving, because both of these veggies contain a lot of water.
How long can egg salad sit out?
Don't let your egg salad sit out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. After that point, the temperature of the egg salad can encourage too much bacteria growth to be deemed safe. This would be the same for any deviled egg recipe you may have.
Can egg salad be frozen?
We don't recommend freezing egg salad, since eggs and mayonnaise don't particularly freeze well. We found the consistency was watery and the eggs were rubbery.
